Clifton Man Survives Drop Off Red Mountain Pass

A Clifton man is in jail in Montrose County after he was believed to have been driving under the influence of drugs when he drove his car off of Red Mountain Pass near Ouray.

Thirty-five-year-old George Odell Hill survived the more than 420 feet drop down a steep snow slide chute. Trooper Don Brown says Hill apparently jumped out of his car as it went over the side. Hill is claiming he fell asleep at the wheel but investigators say it appeared Hill had been using Methamphetamine.

After the crash Hill was able to crawl back up to the roadway and was found by a state transportation worker. The crash was almost in the same spot as a wreck in February where six people suffered only minor injuries when their van went over the side of the road and rolled several times as it plunged into the river below.
