Ten-Year-Old Wins International Art Contest

A local elementary school student in Mesa County has gained worldwide attention for a drawing she submitted to an international contest. Ten-year-old Cheyenne Hector has won for the month of December the NASA Soho program’s "Sunworks Student Art" contest. Cheyenne is a student a New Emerson Elementary School on Orchard Mesa. And is the youngest student in Grand Junction to ever win this competition. Cheyenne's parents say they knew at the early age of two that their daughter had a special gift and always encouraged her talents by providing her with the tools she needed. But Cheyenne is not the only student here to have won this award. A total of eight school district 51 students have won this international contest, making Grand Junction the highest accumulative winner of any city or state in the country.
