His brother–in–law and former U.S. representative Scott Mcinnis introduced Matt Smith as the obvious and seasoned choice to replace term limited Ron Teck. Matt Smith represented house district 54 for eight years and says he's ready to take his experience to the senate. Smith says his campaign will focus on water.. transportation and energy issues.
Republican state representative Josh Penry who replaced Matt Smith when he was term limited in 2004 is also running for the senate seat.
