A theft suspect tries to avoid police by jumping off the Fifth Street bridge into some icy water. The incident began at 4:40 this evening when an Orchard Mesa business reported a theft in progress. An employee at ALCO gave police a description of the vehicle used in the theft. Officers then located the vehicle heading north on Highway 50. When police pulled the car over on the Fifth street bridge the passenger in the car, Jesus Roberto Holguin tried to push the driver out of the vehicle. Holguin then got out of the car and jumped over the guard rail into the river below. He then pulled himself onto a pillar in the middle of the river and that's when the fire department and ambulance service was called into to perform a rescue. Holguin was taken to St. Mary's Hospital as a precaution. He faces charges of resisting arrest and theft. Holguin also had a number of felony warrants out for his arrest. The other people in the vehicle were detained by police and released.
