Settlement Made In Wildland Fire

The Bureau of Land Management will be reimbursed the cost of fighting a wildfire that started on private property, and spread to public lands. In July of 2003 the Carr Fire burned 125 acres north of De Beque. An investigation by the BLM determined the fire was ignited by equipment on property owned by David Meyers of De Beque. Last week the BLM reached a settlement with Meyers' insurance company resulting in a $64,000 payout for the cost of fighting the fire. BLM officials say this should stand as an example of the ramifications that can be imposed on those who choose to be careless and disregard fire restrictions, during wildfire season.
