Mesa County commissioners today approved the purchase of 14 replacement cars and trucks for the county, but not before a discussion about where the vehicles should be purchased.
County administrators are urged to make purchases from the lowest bidder, which in this case was a dealer from Glenwood Springs.
Commissioner Janet Rowland questioned how much extra it would cost to buy the vehicles locally. After being informed the difference was less than $2,000 commissioners decided to go ahead with local purchases.
Commissioner Craig Meis said, "we agree that saving money is a good thing, but we have to look at other things like warranty work, and where the money is going."
In the end 10 of the 14 vehicles were purchased locally, including two in-town dealers that were already low bidders. Meis said the commissioners plan to look at the issue of making local purchases in the near future.
