Mesa County Enters Mercury Thermometer Replacement Program

The Mesa County Health Department is joining the Colorado Department of Public Health in making the state's medicine chests mercury–free.

Mesa County residents are asked to bring their mercury thermometers...
which contain a silver or metallic–grey liquid to two locations for safe and proper disposal. The thermometers should be transported in such a way that they cannot break.

Mercury has been linked to neurological problems in newborns and even in adults. Mercury is also an environmental hazard that can travel through the food chain to humans.

Thermometers can be brought to the Clifton Fire Department on F Road
or the hazardous waste collection facility at the Mesa County Landfill.
Free replacement thermometers will be available while supplies last.
