Three Grand Junction residents are safe and sound Sunday after spending the night in an SUV near the Escalante Canyon. According to the Mesa County Sheriff's Office, Steven Hunt, Daniel Hoskin, Brandi Kalmus were recreating in the area of Dillard Mesa Saturday when their SUV became stuck in mud and snow. A passerby on an ATV took one of the men to a spot where he could use his cell to call a friend. Later the ATV rider called the sheriff's office out of concern
and a search was launched Sunday morning. When deputies arrived with Mesa County Search and Rescue they found the three hungry and tired but otherwise uninjured and in good health. It took more than three hours to get the vehicle out. Sheriff's deputies say the group was smart to stay with their vehicle and in doing so rescue efforts were minimized.
