Dog Meat Off The Menu During Beijing Olympics

By  |

Beijing (AP) Patrons at some restaurants in Beijing won't be able to order any canine cuisine during the Olympic Games next month.

Dog meat has been struck from the menus of officially designated Olympic restaurants. And Beijing tourism officials are telling other eateries to discourage people from ordering dishes made from dogs.

Chinese state media quote one official as saying servers should “patiently” suggest other options to diners who order dog.

Dog is known as “fragrant meat” in China and is eaten by some Chinese for its purported health-giving qualities.

The Beijing games are not the first Olympics to ban dog meat. South Korea nixed canine consumption during the 1988 Seoul Olympics.
