Snow Slams Grand Valley

Video will be available shortly.

Snow fell through much of Friday in the Grand Valley, bringing delight to some and misery to others. Between 6AM and 8AM Grand Junction Police Officers responded to more than a dozen accidents, prompting an accident alert through the morning hours. The Colorado State Patrol was also busy, with at least 21 accidents reported on Interstate 70.

Powderhorn Resort on the Grand Mesa reported two feet of snow at the ski area in about 48 hours, while valley areas reported between 1 and 1/2 inches and 4 inches of snow.

Heavy snow was also reported in the San Juan Mountains, bringing some relief to the parched Southwestern part of Colorado. However, the heavy snows have settled on old, dense snowpack, bringing warnings from the National Weather Service of the high possibility of avalanches.

More snow is expected over the next several days as a low pressure system continues to dominate the west and more storms more eastward from the Pacific Coast.
