Durango, Colo. (AP)- After several weeks of dry mountain
weather heavy snow this weekend is boosting the state's snowpack.
It had dropped to 88 percent of the 30–year average a week ago. Sunday it stood at 93 percent. More importantly, the heaviest snow fell in the drought–parched southwest. Wolf Creek Ski Area picked up 66 inches in three days. The San Miguel–Dolores–Animas–San Juan Basin snowpack rose from 46 percent a week ago to 58 percent. The Upper Rio Grande was up from 42 percent to 52 percent. Although the snow snarled mountain traffic, ski areas welcomed it as they approach their busiest period, spring break.
