GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO) UPDATE: Size restrictions on vehicles allowed to travel on 25 road have been removed. It is now open to all traffic.
UPDATE: According to CDOT, clearance for the 25 road overpass is listed at 15 feet 5 inches but really should be closer to 3 inches shorter than that.
Even so, there are signs leading up to the bridge on the median, on the right shoulder and on the bridge itself warning drivers of the extra low clearance.
"We definitely would not open the bridge if it weren't safe at this time," says CDOT spokesperson, Ashley Mohr. "We will continue to check it to make sure that it remains safe and make sure that it remains something that can be easily traversed for the traveling public."
According to the Department of Transportation, because there isn't any serious damage, repairs to the bridge may take weeks or even months to repair.
UPDATE: 25 Road overpass and Eastbound I-70 are both fully open now.
The overpass was periodically closed due to semi-truck hitting the overpass and dislodging concrete, also causing EB I-70 to be reduced to 1 lane.
Although there is no weight restriction to the 25 Road overpass, they are not allowing vehicles with over-sized loads to cross the bridge.
According to Grand Junction Police, one lane of eastbound I-70 near the 25 Road overpass was closed just after 8:30am because a semi-truck hit the overpass.
There is debris on the interstate, and engineers are inspecting the bridge to make sure it's safe.
The Colorado State Patrol is investigating the crash. The Grand Junction Police Department is assisting the CSP with traffic control.
