Commissioners Declare Child Abuse Awareness Month

367 cardboard cutouts on the lawn of the old Mesa County Courthouse represent local victims as the Mesa County Commissioners proclaim April Child Abuse Awareness Month.

Joined by members of the Mesa County Department of Human Services, the Early Childhood Partnership and others, the commissioners hope to raise awareness of child abuse prevention programs.

One child advocate at the gathering says preventing child abuse is something everyone can help with by offering harried and overworked parents a hand in child rearing.

Child advocates are mailing more than 57,000 brochures about child abuse to residents this week. Currently there are about 350 children and teens in foster care in Mesa County, and so far this year at least two children have died at the hands of abusers.
