As gas prices rise and more and more people are riding bicycles to offset cost, the number of accidents involving cyclists has shot up across the country. In Grand Junction, however, those accidents have actually decreased.

In Grand Junction from January to June 2007 there were 28 accidents involving cars and bicycles. The good news is for that same time period in 2008 there were only seven.
Police attribute this to drivers and bikers both being more cautious.

Chris Brown from Brown's Cycles says there's no doubt there are more cycles on the road. And bicyclists are helping more than just themselves - Brown says if just one percent of our population here in Grand Junction would trade our gas pedals for bike pedals, there would be 600 less cars on the road.

About 20 million people nationwide are riding bikes.
