On a quiet Friday morning residents in the Candlewood trailer park woke to the sounds of ambulances and emergency vehicles pulling up to unit 174. Sheriff's spokesperson Susan Redmond says when an altercation between 27-year-old Hortencia Mendoza and 35-year-old Cristobal Felix–Vega ended both were injured. Mendoza's injuries however were fatal and she died in route to the hospital. The coroner's post-mortem report shows Mendoza died from a stab wound to the chest and the manner of death has been ruled a homicide. Feliz–Vega now named the primary suspect in this case is being treated at St. Mary's Hospital and is expected to make a full recovery. A neighbor tells 11 News the couple and three children moved into the home last fall and appeared to be a normal loving family. The three children all belonging to the victim are now in the custody of the Mesa County Department of Human Services. An investigation is underway to determine the motive in the stabbing. Authorities would not say what the exact weapon was used in the incident only that is was a sharp object. And as with any crime scene, the Colorado Bureau of Investigation is assisting in collecting evidence.
