UPDATE: Drowning victim identified

DELTA COUNTY, Colo. Update at 12 p.m. on 6/6/14: The drowning victim has been identified as 16-year-old Grayson Burris, of Montrose, the Delta County Sheriff's Office said.

Grayson was swimming in the Escalante Creek's pot holes Thursday before 2 p.m. He tried helping one of his friends who was struggling against the current when he got caught in the undercurrent, the sheriff said.

Authorities responded to the call at 2:15 p.m. At 6:30 p.m., Grayson's body was recovered.

Update: A Montrose boy's body was recovered after drowning in the Delta County potholes in Escalante Canyon.
The teen was with two others at the time.
The Sheriff's office is still investigating the teen's death, and it is not yet known if drugs or alcohol played a role in the accident.

Delta County Sheriff's Office, Delta County Search and Rescue, Mesa County Search and Rescue, along with the Mesa County Technical Rope Team are responding to an incident at the Delta County potholes in Escalante Canyon.

The incident involving a juvenile male has officially turned into a recovery effort. Two teenager girls and Grayson were on the river at the time of the incident. The boy's father has reportedly arrived on scene. We have a crew at the location and we will bring you more information as soon as we can.
