Agencies Warn Against Partying At The Potholes

"Think before you act." Words of caution issued by the BLM and Delta County Sheriff's Office for those people who plan to swim in the Escalante Potholes this spring and summer. The recreation area is popular this time of year and in the past has been the site of several deadly accidents. That's why the agencies want to get the word out that while swimming and sitting in the potholes is allowed, jumping or diving into the potholes from the surrounding cliffs is prohibited after the BLM implemented new rules last spring. Authorities say often times dangerous situations arise when drugs or alcohol are being used. When there is an emergency, it takes help at least 45 minutes to arrive at the Escalante Potholes Recreation Area. Five people have died as a result of drowning in the past 12 years.
