District 51 Reaches Agreement On Teacher Contracts

Mesa County School District 51 and the Mesa Valley Education Association have come to terms on a new contract for the 2006/2007 school year and there are several notable increases for teachers.
The agreement was unveiled during Tuesday's District 51 School Board meeting, which followed a two–day negotiation process with district and teacher association officials two weeks ago.
For the 2006/2007 school year, teachers can expect a 3.2 percent salary increase, the district will also implement a one time stipend of 1 percent of the total cost of the teacher' salary schedule.
Teachers who have completed the arduous national board certification will receive an annual stipend of 5 percent of their base salary and in addition, health insurance coverage will be bumped up and for those thinking of retirement, another year will be added to the transitional retirement plan.
According to District 51 Spokesperson Jeff Kirtland, every increase is a reflection of the stability and leadership of the district and the strength of the teachers.
