DENVER (AP) _ a new poll suggests republican John McCain and democrat Barack Obama were about even among likely Colorado voters.

The Quinnipiac University Poll released Sunday concluded McCain was favored by 47 percent of those polled, compared to 46 percent for Obama.

About 56 percent of respondents in the Denver-Boulder area said they favored Obama, compared with 36 percent for McCain. In western Colorado, 54 percent of those surveyed supported McCain compared with 40 percent for Obama.

The university's polling institute surveyed 1,060 likely voters statewide by telephone from Aug. 15 to Aug. 21. The margin of error was plus or minus 3 percentage points.

The democratic national convention gets under way Monday in Denver.
