Update: Missing man is former GJ Fire Chief

MESA COUNTY, Colo. Update: The Mesa County Sheriff's Office says 59-year-old Rick Beaty of Grand Junction is the man who was reported missing by boaters on the Gunnison River near Whitewater on Tuesday.

Searchers have been running the Gunnison River by boat and with swimmers in the water today. Despite extensive search efforts crews were unable to locate Beaty. Officials will continue to run the Gunnison River by boat on a daily basis.

A man is missing after jumping into the Gunnison River without a life jacket.

Around 5:15 p.m. Tuesday an adult male was reported missing by fellow boaters while on the Gunnison River near Whitewater. Multiple people with the man reportedly searched for him and those in the missing man’s party told officials he was not wearing a life jacket when he jumped into the river.

Deputies along with Mesa County Search and Rescue responded with at least one boat to get on the water and look for the man, but as of 7:40 p.m. he was still unaccounted for.

Authorities have yet to release the name of the missing man. We will continue to update this story as the information comes into our newsroom.
