A member of a local ATV group is injured during a clean-up of Bangs Canyon today, and the Mesa County Search and Rescue Team is called to help the man.
The unidentified 66-year-old was helping with a clean-up mission of trails in the popular Bangs Canyon recreation area south of Grand Junction when his ATV rolled. The Glade Park Fire Department was first contacted at 12 noon. They were able to reach a member of the SARC team who was in the area performing practice exercises. The rescuer was able to reach the victim quickly, but seven miles of rough terrain between the accident location and Little Park Road made more help necessary. Eventually members of the motorized team and ground team of the volunteer Mesa County Search and Rescue Team arrived to help, and about four-and-one-half hours were required to bring the victim out.
The man reportedly had several broken ribs but was otherwise in good shape. He was transported to St. Mary's Hospital for treatment.
