Watch your mailbox, the Mesa County Sheriff's Office is investigating a possible scam after an Orchard Mesa woman got a suspicious check in the mail.

Jana Burritt says she checked the mail Tuesday night and got a letter from a company called Shoppers Research Inc.

It was addressed to her and claimed she was part of a pre-selected group of mystery shoppers.

The letter came with a check for $4,992 and asked her to spend some of it at different stores and then wire back more than $2,800.

Burritt reported it to deputies first thing Wednesday morning then called 11 News to warn others.

"I don't want someone who is not as informed to go cash this check and then get in a whole lot of trouble for it," Burritt told 11 News on Wednesday.

Mesa County deputies say anytime you get a weird check and someone asks you to send money back it's probably a scam.

Anytime your suspicious, call the sheriff's office to report it so others won't fall prey to the same scam.
