Undated (AP) A new CBS News-New York Times survey suggests Barack Obama is leading John McCain nationally.
The new survey has Obama ahead by five percentage points, 48 to 43, erasing the lead that McCain took after the Republican Convention earlier this month.
Those who say the economy is in bad shape are heavily behind Obama, while those who think the economy is stable or getting better tend to back McCain.
Independent voters have also swung back toward Obama.
One-fourth of the voters say they could change their mind or are undecided.
The margin of error was plus or minus 3 percent.
