Accident Leaves One Man Dead; Closes Highway For Hours

Video will be available shortly.

An accident that occurred at 7:15 am Thursday closed a stretch of Highway 6 and 50 for about four hours. The motorcycle driven by 46–year–old Michael Nichols of Grand Junction collided with a car entering Highway 6 and 50 from a ramp off the Redlands Parkway. The impact caused Nichols to lose control of his Harley–Davidson cruiser and crash. Both the motorcycle and car ended up in the center of the highway with the car facing oncoming traffic. Nichols was taken to St. Mary's Hospital in critical condition, but died of blunt force head injuries at the hospital. He was not wearing a helmet. The driver of the car is 24–year–old Jana Marie Johnson of Grand Junction. She was not injured. The investigation continues into the accident. Charges may be filed pending results of the investigation.
