Twelve animals have tested positive for the plague in the Redlands area and the Colorado National Monument.
The Mesa County Health Department is issuing a warning for residents to avoid contact with wild rodents, especially animals that are acting abnormal or are dead.
A cat has also tested positive with the plague in the area., so pet owners should use good flea control practices and look for any abnormalities in your pet. The plague is usually passed through fleas.
Human symptoms of the plague usually develop two to six days after being infected. Some plague symptoms include muscle pain, a sudden high fever, and nausea and vomiting.
