A ranch northwest of Debeque will pay the federal government $155,000 in a settlement agreement for starting the Brush Mountain fire in 2003.
The fire started as workers cleared brush on the Colorado Nature Ranch. Because there were fire restrictions in effect at the time the United States Attorney's Office decided to pursue charges in the case.
The fire burned nearly 5300 acres of public and private lands and threatened nearby ranches. It took more than 300 firefighters three weeks to contain the fire at a cost of at least three–quarters of a million dollars.
