A fundraiser for the Gateway–Unaweep Volunteer Fire Department has an addictive and exciting twist to the same old target practice: dynamite.

The fundraiser is a shooting competition involving pop cans full of dynamite.

More than 200 shooters came out to the Community Center in Gateway on Saturday afternoon to get a feel of the boom, literally.

Shooters buy tickets and get a turn taking aim at cans ranging from 60 to 1,000 yards away, a moving deer target, or a hand gun target.

The money goes toward both the fire department and a winner’s pot for the sharpest shooter in each round, but shooters say the thrill of the boom is the real payout.
