A fire in a storage room in the K-Mart in Grand Junction sends shoppers into the parking lot this afternoon.
Firefighters arrived ion the scene with two engines at around 3:45. When flames were discovered in the building two more engines were called to respond. A total of 17 firefighters assisted with the operation. It is not known how long the fire was burning, but the sprinklers started working only after crews entered the area.
Mike Page with the Grand Junction Fire Department says everyone evacuated the building quickly and orderly, and happened so quickly that some customers left their items at the check out counter.
Officials say the store will be remain closed for several hours, but it could be longer depending on smoke damage in the sales area of the building. There were no injuries, and investigators are working to determine the cause of the fire.
