Fire Destroys Grand Junction Carport

The Grand Junction Fire Department responded to a carport that caught fire Sunday. Six units and 17 personnel responded to the fire at 542 Melody Lane just before 4 p-m. According to spokesperson Mike Page, firefighters arrived on scene to find flames and smoke. Witnesses reported hearing at least two explosions, which fire officials say were caused by the fire and the overheating of electrical wires leading to the home. The fire did extend to the home, damaging a bedroom. A small camper and the vinyl siding of a neighboring home sustained heat damage. No injuries were reported. Authorities say no one lives in the home. Total loss to the carport and its contents is estimated at $60,000. Firefighters are still working to determine the cause of the fire.
