(Grand Junction, KKCO)_The FAA is sending investigators to Grand Junction to look into a midair collision that happened at around 8:45 a.m.

FAA Spokesperson Mike Fergus says the agency got reports of the crash 15 miles southeast of Grand Junction. Fergus says two aircraft were involved. One is a Cessna 180 the other is a Cessna 210.

Fergus tells 11 News that the Cessna 180 had two people on board and from early reports it was able to make an emergency landing near Whitewater. According to Mike Page with the Grand Junction Fire Department the two people on board only suffered minor injuries.

According to an FAA website, the Cessna 180 is registered to Meil Del Rio Grande Inc. out of Monte Vista, Colorado.

The Cessna 210 had four people on board and landed safely on Runway 4 at the Grand Junction Regional Airport at 8:57a.m. MDT. The Cessna 210 belongs to the Mesa County Sheriff's Office and had a pilot, a deputy and two inmates on board according to officials. The inmates were being transferred to the department of correction. The four were not injured.

Fergus says the FAA is sending investigators to the Grand Junction to interview both pilots and look to see if they had flight plans and talk to air traffic controllers about any communication from the pilots to the ground. Officials say mid-air collisions are extremely rare and happen only about 2-3 times a year. They say that's a small number considering there can up to 6,000 commercial aircraft flying across the United States at any given time. The FAA says it's also very rare to have a mid-air collision without serious injuries or fatalities.
