Effort Begins To Recall Two Mesa Commissioners

A Palisade farmer and woodcutter's dispute with two Mesa County Commissioners takes to the streets today as Jim Sterling and supporters hold a protest in front of the old Mesa County Courthouse. Sterling is starting a recall petition against Commissioners Tillie Bishop and Janet Rowland over their vote to deny Sterling's conditional use permit. Sterling says that it is his right to earn a living by selling firewood to supplement his income as a farmer.

Several weeks ago the Commissioners voted 2-to-1 to deny Sterling's Conditional Use Permit to operate the woodlot, saying that the business went beyond the definition of a home business.

In order to recall the Commissioners, Sterling must get more than 1,400 signatures to recall Commissioner Janet Rowland and 8,100 to recall Commissioner Tille Bishop. Signatures must but at the Elections Office by early July.

No Mesa County Commissioner has ever been successfully recalled.
