Campsite Pickings Slimmer On Mesa This Year

Finding a site in a campground was a bigger task than usual on the Grand Mesa this weekend. Not only was it a holiday, but a number of campgrounds are closed this summer so crews can clear a logjam of trees.

Weakened by bark beetles and a root fungus, spruce trees were easy prey for a winter windstorm that blew down hundreds of trees at four of the Mesa's most popular campgrounds. Those closures mean only six campgrounds are open, and that sent some people searching for some cool–weather camping options, including going into the back-country.

A spokesperson for the Grand Mesa National Forest says it may be next year before the four campgrounds are re–opened.
