First West Nile-Carrying Mosquitoes Detected In Mesa County

Video will be available shortly.

That pesky mosquito buzzing around your head could be dangerous according to the Mesa County Health Department today.

The Grand River Mosquito Control District collected samples from Fruita and the Redlands on July Fifth that tested positive for the virus. This report comes a month after a dead magpie also tested positive. To date there have been no human cases reported in Mesa County, but two people in eastern Colorado have become ill.

The Health Department says residents should try to stay inside at dusk and dawn when insects are active. Otherwise, you should wear long sleeved shirts and pants and use an insect repellent with DEET or other effective chemicals.
