Lightning Keeps Fire Crews Busy

Several fast-moving thunderstorms produced numerous lightning strikes around Mesa County Wednesday afternoon. A three–story home on the Redlands appears to have been struck by lightning, one of several structures reported to have been hit in the west valley Wednesday.

Fire crews responded in the 4 o'clock hour to 1901 Broadway. The residents were able to get out of the home safely after a small fire started in a mattress on the second floor. Damage to the home is estimated to be about ten–thousand dollars, mostly from smoke.

A lightning storm earlier today caused thousands in the Fruita area to loose power for about a half an hour today. Xcel energy reports the outage started at around 2:30 and was restored just after 3 o'clock. The outage affected up to 1500 Xcel customers.

Wildland fire crews were also busy, with small fires reported on Colorado National Monument as well as Plateau Valley and DeBeque. None of those fires are thought to be sigificant.
