Telluride artist Richard Arnold is a veteran of the Viet Nam War himself, but he says he learned something about the perils of war when showing his work. Several Marines told him the statue looked too well-fed and healthy to be coming back from that conflict, so Arnold re-did the sculpture to make the man look weary.
He says he could not do his work without the skill and dedication of the workers at the Lands End Sculpture Center, who cast and finish metal works for artists from around the country.
