After receiving a tip from a Utah police officer, Mesa County Sheriff's deputies recovered 27pounds of marijuana and more than $1,000 from a car along the Interstate.
Just after 2:00 Sunday morning, members of the Mesa County Street Crimes Unit spotted a white Nissan Altima driving eastbound on I-70, that had been called in as suspicious. Officials say a Utah police officer had pulled the car over in Blanding, Utah hours before and suspected there were drugs inside. However, he had no access to a K-9 unit and had to let the car go.
Deputies pulled the car over near the Horizon Drive exit, and found 20-year-old Melissa Van Wey and 22-year-old Robert Jones, both of Kansas City, inside.
After questioning the pair, a K-9 unit was called out to the scene and the car was searched. Deputies found two large packages of marijuana, weighing 27 pounds, and $1,119 in the front consul of the car.
Van Wey and Jones were arrested and booked into the Mesa County Jail. According to an arrest affidavit, Van Wey admitted she knew they were transporting illegal drugs for $3,000 which she and Jones were going to split.
They are both being held at the Mesa County Jail on $10,000 bonds.
