MESA COUNTY, Colo. (KKCO) -- Law enforcement take down what they call the most organized and sophisticated drug ring in their jurisdiction's history.
Western Colorado agencies gathered at the Mesa County Justice Center Thursday to announce the grand jury indictment of 36 people involved in an international methamphetamine and cocaine operation.
Officials say traffickers brought the drugs from Mexico to Colorado, California, Nevada and the southeast U.S.
In December 2012, law enforcement got a tip that led to the investigation. Agents from the Western Colorado Drug Task Force, Drug Enforcement Administration and Two Rivers Drug Enforcement Team worked with confidential sources, surveillance, wiretaps and more for four months to build enough evidence for arrests.
Chief Deputy District Attorney Dan Rubinstein says 10 people have been accused for racketeering, and 26 others were indicted for money laundering, distributing and other drug-related charges. Many had a prior criminal history. Twenty-five of the accused are in custody.
The agencies are still seeking arrest warrants for others involved, according to Rubinstein.
In all, law enforcement confiscated ten pounds of meth and nine pounds of cocaine, enough to cripple drug distribution in Western Colorado, officials say. They also seized $144,300, nine guns and eight vehicles during the execution of search warrants.
