Counting The Homeless Population

No one really knows how many homeless people live in Colorado, but coalitions statewide are teaming up to get an answer.

On Monday for the first time in 17 years a survey will be taken of the homeless in our state in an effort to determine the need among these people and just how many there are. Volunteers are needed in Mesa County to gather information from places such as the Community Shelter and Catholic Outreach. The Grand Valley Coalition for the homeless will conduct two volunteer training sessions this Thursday and Friday at 1:00 p.m. at the Grand Junction Community Homeless shelter. The sessions will get volunteers ready to help administer surveys of the county's homeless population and conduct a one–day head count as well. Organizers say this survey should provide some hard numbers.

Those who would like to help with the survey are urged to attend one of the two upcoming training sessions. The actual survey will be done the evening of the 28th and the morning of the 29th. For more information contact Teresa Black at 256–9424.
