Car Collides With Semi-Truck

Flames erupted early Saturday morning after a car driving the wrong way on Interstate 70 collided head on with a semi truck. The driver of the Pontiac car that struck the semi was pronounced dead at the scene.
The crash closed Interstate 70 for nearly four hours early this morning.

It also caused diesel tanks to rupture in the semi truck, igniting a fire that incinerated the semi as well as the 2006 Pontiac G6 which had crossed over from the east bound lanes into the west bound side.

The flames also caused a brush fire north of the interstate. Fire crews from the Debeque, Palisade and Grand Junction Fire Department's responded to help extinguish the fire. The Mesa County Coroner's Office pronounced the driver of the Pontiac dead at the scene. He has not been identified yet. It is not known if alcohol was a factor in the crash. The driver of the semi–truck, 45 year old Douglas Powell, was uninjured and a passenger in the semi was taken to Saint Mary's hospital with minor injuries. The crash remains under investigation by the Colorado State Patrol.
