The United States is failing when it comes to tobacco control — according to a new report from the American Lung Association.

Experts failed the U.S. Government for a lack of action in 2008. A bill that would have given the FDA authority to regulate cigarettes was not passed by the senate, and the federal cigarette tax remained at 39 cents a pack.

States were graded on smoke–free laws, cigarette tax amounts, funding for smoking cessation programs and their coverage of smoking aids for Medicaid recipients.

Colorado got an 'A' in having smoke free air but got an 'F' in cessation coverage. Experts say raising cigarette taxes and providing more funding for smoking cessation programs will help cut smoking rates.

Statistics show tobacco–related diseases kill over 392,000 Americans each year.
