Nearly five days after a fiery crash the victim is finally identified by the coroner's office.
Authorities say 46–year–old Melissa Sherwin of Grand Junction died early Saturday morning from thermal injuries. The Mesa County Coroner's Office says Sherwin was identified through several personal items found in a car that was rented under her name. They also used her medical history to make a positive match.
The coroner's office was unable to use dental records because Sherwin's body was so badly burned. It may never be known if alcohol or drugs played a role in the accident.
According to authorities Sherwin was driving the wrong way on interstate 70 when she crashed head on into a semi. The crash caused a fire to ignite that incinerated both vehicles.
