Search For Missing Swimmer Continues

Nearly 24 hours after a Grand Junction man is lost on the waters of the Gunnison River, search teams have still found no signs of the victim.

The search resumed Tuesday morning, after being called off at around 9:00 p.m. Monday night due to darkness and dangerous conditions.

25-year-old Grand Junction resident Edgar Moralez went missing shortly before 6:00 p.m. Monday night after he had been swimming in the Gunnison River near the roller dam on Orchard Mesa. He apparently went missing when he got too close to the dam and got caught in the undertow.

On Tuesday, members of the Mesa County Search and Rescue team, as well as the sheriff's office, resumed the search at dawn. However, despite the man power and dozens of family members on the banks providing rescuers with information, the body has still not been discovered.

One idea that searchers had was to slow the water flow from the roller dam, which supplies the Redlands canal and power plant to perhaps give rescuers a better shot of finding Moralez. However, after consulting with engineers with the Department of Wildlife and Redlands Power Company, the idea was scrapped.

Searchers also believe that the body has not surfaced somewhere down river and will continue to look for Moralez' body, although as more time passes the search efforts will likely decrease. Sheriff's officials do say they will not cease until the body is recovered.
