A new book by a local author is highlighting the history of the Colorado National Monument.

Alan Kania shared some pictures of monument founder John Otto at his book signing at the Dinosaur Journey Museum in Fruita Wednesday afternoon.

Kania is an author and historian who has spent the last 30 years researching the Colorado National Monument and has penned two books on the subject.

He says his book is not just for the indoors and it's getting kids and adults interested in our local history.

"People have used the book as a trail guide even to find some of the Otto trails up on the monument and on the Grand Mesa. A lot of young people have learned about John Otto as a local folk hero," Kania told 11 News on Wednesday.

The author will be speaking in the New Classroom Building at Mesa State College starting at 6:30pm Wednesday. The presentation is free.

His new book, "Images of America: Colorado National Monument" is $34.99 in hardback, $23.99 in paperback and can be found at Hastings, the Colorado Museum of the West and the Colorado National Monument Visitor's Center.
