An inmate at the Mesa County Jail was transported to the hospital this morning after what authorities are calling a deliberate leap off a second tier balcony.
According to the Mesa County Sheriff's Office, around 7:15 this morning a female inmate deliberately jumped from the second story balcony where she was housed with other inmates. She apparently suffered a hip and pelvic fracture and trauma as a result. The incident is still under investigation.
"It was on video and it was also witnessed by staff and inmates. they have been interviewed and we reviewed the video and our investigation is now why," says Sheriff Stan Hilkey.
The woman has been in custody at the Mesa County Detention Facility since late September, and was in custody under suspicion of a violation of probation from a previous arrest for arson and possession of a controlled substance.
