Firefighters respond to a blaze at the abandoned Grand Valley By–Products plant for the second time in less than eight months, and once again the cause is thought to be arson.
Heavy smoke and fire was already coming from the building when the first units arrived at 9:44 last night. Due to safety concerns the fire was fought from outside the building.
Although the site has been largely abandoned for some time, there was material in the building but it was not thought to be the cause of the fire. Grand Junction Fire Department Investigator Doug Lucas says nothing in the building was capable of self-ignition, and he says though there is no scientific evidence to support the claim, arson cannot be ruled out.
Damages are estimated to be about 200–thousand dollars. A fire on February 17th swept through another building on the property that was also determined to be arson. No arrests have been made in that case.
