Transformer Accident Causes GJ Building Evacuations

An afternoon accident Wednesday involving a transformer in downtown Grand Junction caused electrical outages and evacuations.

According to the Grand Junction Fire Department, a vehicle collided with the transformer located at the US Bank building on White Ave. shortly after 2:00 p.m.

The impact created what fire fighters called a loud bang, along with causing power to shut down along the 400 block of White Ave.

The short was responsible for smoke that was spotted inside the US Bank building, which sparked fire alarms and evacuations.

There was no threat of fire inside buildings and Xcel Energy responded to the scene to take care of the transformer box.
