A groundbreaking today marks the beginning of construction on a much–anticipated parking structure in downtown Grand Junction.

The innovative building will have room for 109 spaces for hourly parking, and an additional 323 spaces open to long–term lease.

Though the structure is a parking garage the architecture will look much like existing downtown buildings. A representative of project contractor Shaw Construction says the urban environment poses some special challenges, as there will not be much room for materials and space for work.

The parking garage will cost 7 million dollars to build and should be open in about a year.
