On the first day of early voting more than a thousand people headed to the polls to cast their vote.

The first day of early voting is now officially in the books and according to the Mesa County Clerk and Recorder's Office, 1,146 people took part in early voting. That is more than half of the number of people who turned out for the first day of early voting for the 2002 Gubernatorial Election, but not as many as for the 2004 Presidential Election.

People are also casting their votes early through the mail. 16–thousand absentee ballots have been mailed out in Mesa County with more being requested everyday.

Local elections officials are predicting a 70% voter turnout in Mesa County. The final day for early voting before this election day is November 3. Absentee voters have until November 7 to turn in ballots.
