The Clifton area was left without power for a few minutes after a sleepy driver took out a power pole this morning.
Valentine Gallegos of Grand Junction was southbound on 32 Road when he apparently fell asleep. His truck veered across the road and onto the sidewalk, taking out a Grand Valley Transit bench and planter before continuing onward to shear a power pole. A Grand Valley Transit bus was also hit by flying debris.
Colorado State Patrol Trooper Mike Jamison says Gallegos was lucky to escape serious injury as the pole crashed onto his truck. He was not injured, but was taken to the hospital for a checkup.
Gallegos has been charged with careless driving, not having insurance, displaying fictitious license plates, insurance termination and driving with a suspended license due to non–payment of child support.
Xcel energy was able to quickly switch power to minimize the outage.
