Members of the Mesa County Meth Task Force got a look at the front line of the war on drugs at their meeting today.
Mesa County Sheriff Stan Hilkey talked about his trip to El Paso, Texas with members of the federal Drug Enforcement Administration. The purpose of the trip was to see how agents are trying to intercept drugs at the border before they can ruin the lives of millions of people.
Hilkey says his visit was an eye–opener that shows how difficult halting the flow of drugs can be. On any day more than 20-thousand vehicles pass through one of the five border checkpoints located in the border city.
Hilkey says one checkpoint stopped a truck carrying 20–thousand pounds of illegal drugs. A legal wiretap revealed that while that truck was caught three other vehicles carrying even more drugs got through.
